History of Procorad
First Intercomparisons in Radiotoxicology
The first known intercomparisons, based on the model proposed by the French Ministry of Health to guarantee confidentiality, took place in 1978 with a restricted group of exclusively French laboratories, with the participation of the Institut de Protection et de Sûreté Nucléaire(IPSN).
Increased shareholdings
From 1992 onwards, the number of participants increased considerably due to the demand for registration from foreign laboratories, making it necessary to set up a structure to organize quality controls that had become international.
Creation of Procorad
PROCORAD is a non-profit association set up in November 1995 on the initiative of pharmacist-biologists, members of the Association of French Nuclear Industry Biologists(ABNF), working in medical biology analysis laboratories in nuclear centers and establishments, in collaboration with occupational medical services, to ensure the medical surveillance of workers exposed to ionizing radiation.
Working with the IAEA
In 2000, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), headquartered in Vienna (A), in conjunction with the PROCORAD Association, organized an intercomparison for its member states concerning the detection and measurement of gamma radio-emitters in urine. 33 laboratories representing their respective countries and the IAEA laboratory took part in the exercise. A meeting to present the results, attended by the heads of the participating laboratories, was held in Vienna on november 11 and 12. The IAEA greatly appreciated PROCORAD's technical contribution throughout the inter-comparison.
