Total alpha emitters on nasal mucus

The unit used for this inter-laboratory comparison is the becquerel per sample (Bq/sample). The maximum number of participants is 25.

2 samples 25PNA and 25PNB flags (per pair) and 2 samples 25PNC and 25PND handkerchiefs:

  • 1 sample overloaded with total alpha emitters (238Pu and/or 239Pu and/or 241Am and/or 254Cm) < 1 E+00 Bq/Sample.
  • 1 sample overloaded with total alpha emitters (238Pu and/or 239Pu and/or 241Am and/or 254Cm) <2 E+00 Bq/Sample

Laboratories will provide a qualitative response (presence or absence) and/or a quantitative response for flags and/or handkerchiefs.

This presentation provides a general overview of the Total Alpha Emitters on nasal mucus intercomparison. The information given here is for guidance only. For official, up-to-date data, please refer to the current year’s interlaboratory comparison campaign plan.

CEA Valduc / Laboratory responsible for intercomparison of alpha emitters on nasal mucus
Expert biologist: Eléonore Bertaut

The CEA Centre for Nuclear Studies at Valduc belongs to the military applications Division and includes several Basic Nuclear Installations.

The Centre's LBM is in charge of monitoring all staff working on site from a biological, toxicological and radiotoxicological point of view.

In order to achieve this, the LBM carries out:

  • Gamma spectrometry on urines
  • Gamma and X-ray spectrometry on the lungs,
  • Urine and stool analysis in order to monitor exposure to actinides,
  • Urine and saliva monitoring of personnel exposed to tritium.

The laboratory is certified by the COFRAC and the French Nuclear Safety Authority regarding the monitoring of workers exposure to ionizing radiation.
